Yoga is an ancient practice rooted in Indian philosophy. It is much more than just meditative or physical exercise, it is a complete philosophy of life. It is a detailed methodology to live with intention, to connect with our highest truth, and to make choices that serve our highest good. Through our yoga, we come back to our true nature over and over, as we peel back layers of conditioning and habit. Every time we use our yoga mat or sit in quiet meditation, we have an opportunity to discover who we truly are, cutting through the noise and nonsense in the world. Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word which translates to “yoke” or “union.” Yoga means to draw or bind together, or to unite the body, mind, soul. The physical, spiritual and mental aspects of yoga help you to focus your mind bringing that much sought-after stress management, improved mental and emotional health, overall healthier habits and more balance. “Yogas Citta Vritti Nirodhah” translates to Yoga is the calming down of the fluctuations/ patterns of the mind. It is a discipline that leads to ultimate freedom. In the West, the word “yoga” has come to mean a particular style called Hatha yoga. This branch emphasizes postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), stress relief, relaxation, physical fitness and wellness. The focus is primarily on the physical body which differs from traditional yoga, where the focus is more inward and spiritual. There are many schools of Hatha, each with its own unique style and philosophy.
